Angus MacDonald conceptualized World on the Edge™ as a publisher for games that made the world better. MacDonald is a professor at the University of Minnesota where he teaches, trains students, and directs research in clinical psychology. World on the Edge, and its premiere product Misteries in Misdeeds™, is a passion project that MacDonald has been developing for more than a decade. MacDonald had been an avid tabletop roleplayer and game master since elementary school, but in 2013 he had an epiphany: our growing scientific understanding of the power of narratives – of our stories – to excite us, draw us in, and impact our understanding of the world could be optimized for fun and cultural appreciation at the same time. He founded World on the Edge with the lofty mission to publish games that leveraged enjoyment for the good of everyone.
Thus began the process of trial-and-error over many iterations to find a time period, a gaming system, and scenarios that would bring the past alive across the globe. Misteries in Misdeeds represents the culmination of playtesting in long form campaigns that spanned decades, and over a hundred scenarios at gaming conventions across the Midwest. Along with my lifelong friend, Jim Drake, we’ve listened to the feedback from hundreds of players who have taken a chance on our setting and our scenarios. The Misteries in Misdeeds setting for Savage Worlds reflects the many lessons I have taken from this journey.
MacDonald has also led seminars at gaming conventions on how and why to bring the past alive in tabletop roleplaying. In 2020, MacDonald founded the Adventure Design Lab bi-weekly game master discussion group for local GM’s to reflect on and refine their craft.
With that momentum, I can now confidently proclaim, “May you game in interesting times.”
